What to expect during your appointment

Some people feel nervous about seeing an osteopath or physiotherapist. This guide is here to reassure you.

Calm arrival at the clinic Treatment room ready for your visit Gentle examination and care

Before you go in

You can ask the receptionist for information. You may take a friend or relative with you into the treatment room if you wish.

Your medical history

On your first visit, the practitioner will ask about your health past and present — medical history (operations and illnesses), any changes in your health, medication, and your doctor’s name and address. Before the first examination, you will be asked to sign a consent form.

Examination

For an accurate evaluation the practitioner examines not only the areas where you have problems, but other parts that may be connected. This usually involves undressing to underwear; a gown is offered and is removed during examination and treatment. You may be asked to perform simple movements. Further tests — such as blood pressure, reflexes, joint mobility and muscle strength — are normally carried out on the couch.

Discussion & treatment

After a thorough examination, the practitioner discusses the evaluation with you and, with your agreement, carries out treatment. Risks and benefits are explained. If osteopathy or physiotherapy is not suitable, you will be told why.

Your questions matter

If you have any questions during treatment, ask the practitioner to stop so you can enquire. It is important that you understand what is happening.

Bringing children

If you need to bring your children with you, please bring someone to look after them whilst you are in the consulting room, as we are not able to offer a child crèche facility.

At the Langham Clinic it is our aim to treat you and your children in the most successful and comfortable way we can. The therapeutic intention is oriented to be non-invasive — we do not utilise high velocity thrust treatment. You or your children may be given appropriate ergonomic advice and exercises.

Osteopathy and physiotherapy help alleviate a range of discomfort and pain. People are not always aware of the variety of problems they can address. We are always willing to advise whether we can help you.

If you are uncertain

Please telephone us — we shall gladly discuss whether a visit is appropriate.
